In this age of AI, personal voice matters now more than ever -- especially in the college essay (whether students are writing the PIQs for the University of California, the Common App personal statement, or essays for other colleges).
Kim has spent over twenty years as a college advisor, both privately and in schools, and supported hundreds of students with their college essays. In this workshop, she will share some of the flash fiction strategies that can supercharge the college essay as a form. 
Through examples and generative exercises, Kim will help students identify the topics that can best position their personal stories in their college applications as well as amplify their writing voices so colleges truly "hear" them in these essays. 

Kim Culbertson Bio

Kim holds an M.S. in Education, an MFA in Fiction and taught high school for almost three decades. She is the award-winning author of five YA novels. Her titlesCatch a Falling Star;The Possibility of Now; andThe Wonder of Uswere Scholastic book club selections. She won the Northern California Book Award for YA fiction forInstructions for a Broken Heartas well as hadThe Possibility of Nownamed a Bank Street Best Book of the Year.

Her first novel for adults, Other People’s Kids (Sibylline 2025) is about (surprise, surprise) teachers, and was named a finalist for the California Independent Booksellers Alliance (CALIBA) 2025 Golden Poppy Award in fiction. Kim also sits on the Writers Council for National Writing Project and works as a fiction mentor with Dominican University of California’s MFA in Creative Writing. With 100-Word Stories: A Short Form for Expansive Writing (Heinemann 2023), Kim finally found a way to blend her two professional loves, teaching and writing, into one book. These small, bright things have transformed her classroom and her own writing. She loves sharing their potential with other teachers and writers.
